Asus ax3000 vs TP-Link

If you stick with the wifi 6 router models, let’s take a look at the differences in the specs between Asus AX3000 and Arcer ax3000 as shown on the table 3 below.

Archer AX55 pro comes with 2.5Gbps WAN port which is ready for future internet speed upgrade. While Asus only comes with 1G WAN port and 4x 1G LAN ports, so in the future if you require internet speed upgrade up to 2G, you cannot.

The other spec difference is the processing speed. Asus RT-AX58U comes equipped with tri-core as opposed to only dual core on Archer AX55 Pro. In terms of processor performance, Asus AX3000 is the better choice.

Asus BE3600 vs Archer

The entry level of wifi7 segment is be3600; most networking vendors introduce this entry level products including Asus with its rt-be58u, and tp-link with its archer be230 wifi7 routers. Wifi7 with its nature MLO (Multi link operation) feature is powerful. It allows a single device to connect simultaneously across multiple frequency bands. The previous wifi standards don’t have this kind of MLO feature.

Prices gap for wifi 6/6e products and wifi 7 products are not large, just slightly difference. So, it is recommended to switch to latest generations of wifi7 products instead of legacy ones. This will assure compatibility with other compliant connected devices that will be coming on the future.

Legacy Deco X60 vs Orbi Is It Still worth Buying

After the success of its WiFi 5 product through its debut, the Deco M5, as the WiFi 6 standard emerged at that time, TP-Link introduced the Deco X20 and X60. Currently, the WiFi 7 standard is available, and TP-Link is utilizing this latest WiFi standard into their products, from entry-level products such as the Deco BE23 and BE25 to high-end products. Are those legacy wifi6 products still worth buying?

Deco x60 is the second wifi 6 products after its successful with its wifi6 debut, deco x20 ax1800. X20 successfully competed with similar products on the market such as Netgear mk62. X60 is twice as much bandwidth as X20, and how those legacy products compete amid the emerging of wifi 7 products on the market?

Currently there are few Deco ax3000 models on the market including:

  • X60 – the first tplink series in ax3000
  • X55 – the second series in ax3000
  • X50 POE – Powerline backhaul

What makes them set apart?

TP-Link Deco AX3000

Deco x60 vs Deco x55

Both deco x60 and x55 are designed with the same ax3000 network segment, dual band delivering bandwidth up to 867Mbps @5GHz and 400Mbps @2.4GHz. The x60 uses 4x internal antennas, while the x55 only uses two internal dual band antennas with AI-driven mesh technology. All the latest Deco series currently come with the same AI Mesh technology.

Ethernet Ports

All previous deco series ranging from deco m5, m9 plus, x20, x25 (new series of deco ax1800), x60, and x90, come with only two 1G Ethernet ports. However, the newer x55 model comes with three 1G ports. all the Ethernet ports feature WAN/LAN auto sensing. This means all unit can be interchangeable, can work either as router or satellite node.

With three Ethernet ports, you can configure wired backhaul using star backhaul topology for three node mesh without adding a switch. Deco x60 with 3-pack, you need to add a non-managed switch for star backhaul topology. Unless, you need to configure them using daisy chain wired backhaul topology.   

The other thing you also need to know is that these two series can either work as mesh wifi router (default mode) or wireless access point mode. You can change from the ‘Change operation mode’ menu and select Access Point radio button. In this case, your modem in home is not a native modem but modem gateway either wired or wireless gateway such as Motorola mg8702 or Asus cmax600.

As a best practice, if you have to use this deco x60 to work as wireless Access Point in business wireless network, it’s better not to use deco products, but use native wifi AP device that is designed to work as wireless AP such as tplink Omada series.

Deco x60 vs BE23

The latest wifi-7 standard has been around, and most vendors introduce their products leveraging this new wifi standard. TP-link introduced deco be23 and be25 for its low end wifi7 products, and other ones in middle to high end products. With this wifi7 products emerging, are deco x60 and other similar products still worth buying?

They are still worth, off course. With the new technology, mostly the products leveraging this wifi standard come with higher price tag. If the high speed demand is not an urgent case, you still can use legacy products with budget friendly.   

Let’s take new deco be23 that comes with current wifi7 standards, and compare it with the legacy x60 series and see how they set apart.

Faster capacity

Deco be23 and be25 is the lower end deco products leveraging wifi7 standards. Be23 and be25 come equipped with 2.5G auto sensing WAN/LAN ports. They can support internet speed up to 2G, easily connect to current high speed DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem that come with 2.5G ports.

With your current connected devices with legacy wifi6, they can support for sure, since the new wifi standards are designed to be backward compatible with previous one. However, when you upgrade all your connected devices to be wifi7 compliant, you get the best speed possible wifi7 can deliver.     

Currently there are few models of USB wifi7 adapters on the market such as TP-Link Archer TBE401UH, or you may consider budget friendly BrosTrend BE6500.

There are still legacy products on the market that are still worth of purchasing such as Orbi rbk750 which is comparable with deco x60.

Deco X60 vs Orbi Rbk750

Deco x60 and Orbi rbk750 don’t work at the same network segment, however the work at slightly different network segment. X60 is a dual band ax3000, while rbk750 is a tri-band ax4200. Orbi uses one of its 5GHz bands as dedicated backhaul link between the nodes. On the other hand deco uses wifi backhaul shared with other connected devices. There always bandwidth allocation for wifi backhaul, even though you use ired backhaul.

Orbi RBK753

Deco doesn’t specifically specify which radio band is used as the wifi backhaul link between nodes, however TP-link uses APS (Adaptive Path Selection) which means that the connection between these nodes adapts to the needs via which radio band is best available when it comes to connecting between nodes for best backhaul link.

Ethernet Ports

Unlike deco units which are interchangeable in nature, Orbi is not. Orbi units distinct which one is router, and which one is satellite unit. Orbi routers come with WAN port, but the Orbi satellites don’t. So, if the Orbi router fails, you cannot switch it with the other satellite node to work as the router. With Deco, you can do that, they come with Ethernet ports that feature WAN/LAN auto sensing.

Internet speed

Deco x60 supports internet speed up to 1G, so does Orbi. However with Orbi, if you require multi-gig internet speed, you can aggregate WAN port with another Ethernet port #1 to connect to cable modem that supports dual Gigabit port and feature aggregation link. You may consider Netgear CM2100 which supports aggregation link.

Currently, the wifi7 products support Multi-gig internet speed at list 2.5Gbps. Orbi 370 series, the new entry level wifi7 products comes with 2.5Gbps WAN port, so does new Deco be23 and be25. Asus xp4 is Mesh Hybrid Powerline backhaul, ideal for homes with thick concrete walls. How this product compete with its rival TP-Link Deco P9?

What Asus XP4 does

One of the performance factors for mesh WiFi system is the solid backhaul link between mesh nodes. Backhaul link can be wired; wireless; or combination of them. The “wifi” backhaul is prone to signal interference that may disrupt link communication between the nodes. It is therefore Asus introduces XP4 Hybrid mesh Powerline backhaul that uses existing electrical wiring as a backhaul.

Unlike wifi backhaul, wired Ethernet backhaul is relatively solid. However, running UTP cable through thick walls between rooms is challenging, it could be drilling the walls, or passing through the ceiling. With powerline backhaul, you just plug your router into the power outlet on the wall within the house and all mesh wifi nodes are connected using the powerline backhaul.

It doesn’t matter how thick the walls between the rooms, with a powerline link between nodes, they use existing electrical wiring network at home. However, keep in mind that this powerline mesh node network must exist in the same circuit break system.

Wifi 7 standards have been around in the corner, most networking vendors introduce products based on this new wifi standards. Asus introduced wifi 7 products ranging from lower end products including Asus BD4, and Asus BD5, middle range products such as Asus BT10, up to high end products such as Asus BQ16 Pro. However, there is no update for Hybrid Powerline based on wifi 7.

Like Asus, TP-Link introduced similar Powerline product – the Deco P9 which also uses powerline as a backhaul link between mesh nodes.

Asus xp4 features faster backhaul 1300Mbps powerline than deco P9 which is 1000Mbps.

Backhaul Method Options

Unlike the deco p9, asus xp4 gives you 3 backhaul method options to choose:

  1. Wifi backhaul,
  2. wired Ethernet backhaul
  3. and powerline backhaul.

By default, XP4 chooses the backhaul in a smart way automatically, the most reliable path to use as a backhaul. However, asus gives you the options to choose the backhaul manually rather than automatically.

In terms of the backhaul method options between Asus XP4 vs Deco P9, Asus offers better backhaul methods and options than Deco P9.

Wifi technology

Does wifi-6 always provide much higher performance than wifi5 network? If your home connected devices are still based on wifi5, the performance is not much different when connected to a wifi 6 network. Asus XP4 is based on wifi6, while Deco P9is still based on legacy wifi5.

Dual WAN

Unlike TP-Link router products, most Asus products that come with USB port support dual WAN feature. The usb port with 4G/5G dongle can be used as secondary Internet connection in addition of wired internet (as primary Internet). You can configure it either as failover or load balance scenario.

If the requirement of internet service level with no disruption exists, you can use the USB port as the backup solution by connecting a cellular USB dongle to provide cellular internet services, this work as a backup for the main internet services. If the internet service from the cable modem is interrupted, the systems will failover to the cellular network with a usb dongle. And when the main internet is back available the system will fall back to main internet service.

The question is whether this system is important for your home, whether the availability of internet without interruption is a must for your home business or not, you have option to do that. For business needs in offices or head quarter offices that rely on an internet connection with guaranteed no interruptions, it is necessary, but not using a home router or cellular internet service as a backup. So the internet failover system for home needs is not urgency. In terms of internet backup option for asus xp4 vs deco p9, asus xp4 is preference.

Why powerline

Powerline networking uses your home’s electrical wiring to extend network connectivity, including WiFi, by transmitting data signals through the power cables in your walls. It’s especially useful in homes where WiFi signals struggle to reach certain areas due to thick walls, large distances, or interference.

How powerline work

The powerline adapter converts the Ethernet data into signals that can travel over electrical wiring. These signals move through the home’s power circuit to other areas where you need network access. A second powerline adapter is plugged into another electrical outlet in the area where you need internet.

Limitations

Electrical Wiring Quality Matters – Old, damaged, or complex wiring can reduce performance. Another thing that you need to take consideration is that powerline can work in a single circuit breaker system; it cannot work over different circuit breaker system.

Powerline backhaul

When it comes to mesh wifi system, communications between router node and satellite nodes use wifi as backhaul link between them, and wired Ethernet backhaul is an option.

Few models of mesh wifi products use share bandwidth @5ghz radio band for backhaul link and connected devices. There are few models use dedicated band as backhaul link and the other bands are for connected devices. Wifi backhaul is prone to signal interference with others, therefore most mesh wifi products offer optional wired backhaul using ethernet connection. Wired ethernet backhaul is more reliable connection between the nodes than wifi.  

The drawback with wired ethernet backhaul is that you need to run UTP network cable between the nodes, and if the location of the router node and satellite nodes separated by thick wall you need to drill or run the cable onto the ceiling.

It is therefore deco px50 comes designed with powerline backhaul. Powerline backhaul uses existing electrical wiring in home as the backhaul connection between the nodes. One thing to note when you use powerline backhaul is that all the router node and satellite nodes must be in the same electrical circuit breaker.

Deco px50 is the latest model in addition of the previous one deco p9 which is still based on legacy wifi- 5. So what is the difference between these two deco powerline models?

The apparent difference is indeed the difference of wifi generation applied to each of the model. Deco px50 comes designed with the 6th generation of wifi technology, while deco p9 comes with legacy wifi5.

Powerline backhaul

Currently Asus introduces similar product, asus zenwifi xp4 with powerline backhaul. How this product perform when it compare with deco px50?

The apparent difference between these two products is technically different in network segment, the deco px50 with ax3000 segment versus asus zenwifi xp4 with ax1800 network segment. When you combine total aggregated bandwidth, you will find px50 is around 4,500 Mbps (3,000 + 1,500 powerline). On the other hand, asus xp4 is around 3,100 Mbps (1,800 + 1,300 powerline).

Both deco px50 and asus xp4 give you the same number of Gigabit ethernet ports, one for wan port connecting to the modem when it work as the router node, while at the same time when the other nodes work as the satellite node, this port #1 works as lan port for total of three gigabit lan ports. What this Orbi rbk852 does

Orbi’s successful track record with mesh wifi products based on wireless ac (wifi-5) came to a halt with the emergence of wifi-6 technology. To adapt to this change, Orbi launched its flagship product, the Orbi rbk852. This was the highest series for Orbi, followed by the Orbi Rbk752 series (a two-pack of Orbi rbk750) and other series as well. Nowadays you can find ultimate models of Orbi rbe970; Orbi rbe770; and Orbi Rbke963. The first two series are wifi7 products, and the last one is wifi 6e.

It is worth noting that Orbi distinguishes between Orbi mesh router and Orbi mesh satellite for almost all its series. Unlike other mesh wifi models such as Asus Zenwifi or TP-link Deco, these cannot be interchanged.

Wired Backhaul

The Orbi rbk850, and Orbi 860 series like other mesh wifi models, merges an Orbi mesh wifi router and one or more Orbi satellite nodes that establish communication between each other through a wifi backhaul link. Orbi sets itself apart by using a dedicated backhaul link for communication between mesh router and satellite nodes, but you also have the option to use a wired Ethernet backhaul for faster and more reliable wired connection backhaul.

How to wired backhaul

If you opt for a wired backhaul, you can use a Cat6 UTP cable with each end utilizing RJ45 connections. Wondering how to connect using this UTP cable? Please refer to the figure below for detailed instructions. There are two models of wired backhaul topology to choose from: star topology and daisy chain topology.

The star topology (fig 1) requires you to connect each Orbi satellite to the Orbi router, using two LAN ports of the Orbi router and running UTP cables to each of the Orbi satellite’s Ethernet ports. On the other hand, the daisy chain topology (fig 2) involves running one UTP cable from the Orbi router to one of the Orbi satellites, and then running another UTP cable from the first Orbi satellite (that has a connection to the Orbi router) to the second Orbi satellite.

You can also deploy with star topology using an Ethernet switch. Run one UTP cable from Orbi router to the Ethernet switch that might far away from the Orbi router unit, and then you need to run each of Orbi satellites to the switch. Orbi Rbk850 vs Asus XT8

With limited budget to build high performance wifi 6 network at home, both Orbi rbk852 and Asus xt8 are appropriate solution, even though they are not future proof as opposed to the wifi7 products. When it comes to choose between the two legacy models, which one is suitable to meet your home network?

Wifi signals

The Orbi Rbk852 and Asus XT8 Zenwifi are both tri-band wifi-6 mesh systems with similar total bandwidth, but there are some differences in bandwidth allocation. Specifically, there is a bandwidth difference at the 2.4GHz radio band and the two @5GHz radio bands. Orbi uses one of the @5GHz radio bands as a dedicated backhaul link between Orbi nodes, while Asus xt8 Zenwifi allows you to choose which @5GHz radio bands will be used as a dedicated backhaul.

While Asus does offer a wired backhaul option, it’s important to note that using a wired backhaul does not necessarily mean that a dedicated @5GHz backhaul can be used for device connections. Instead, the dedicated @5GHz backhaul is reserved as a fallback backhaul link in case there is a disruption to the Ethernet backhaul link. You can choose between a dedicated @5GHz @1200Mbps backhaul and a wired Ethernet backhaul option, resulting in a total bandwidth of up to 480 + 600 Mbps for connected devices.

Operation Modes

At times, the network setup in your home may not be a cable modem but a cable modem gateway, such as the Netgear cax80. Consequently, Orbi cannot function as a router in this setup, but it can serve as a wireless access point. Orbi offers the option to operate as a WiFi AP. To achieve this, you need to connect one of the Ethernet gateway ports to the Orbi router’s WAN port and modify the configuration settings by selecting Advanced > Advanced > Router / AP Mode and choosing the AP mode radio button.

Similarly, Asus xt8 also provides an option to allow the device to work as a WiFi AP like Orbi, offering various operation mode options. You can select operation mode in the general settings and choose Asus xt8 to work in wireless router mode (default mode), AP mode, Repeater mode, Media bridge, or Aimesh node. It’s worth noting that most of Asus’s recent products feature Aimesh technology, which enables this device to join other Aimesh products to create a whole-home system. For instance, if you already have the latest Asus ET8 mesh wifi 6e system, you can configure xt8 to work as an Aimesh node.

Security protection

The Orbi rbk852 provides a paid feature called Netgear Armor, which offers network threat protection against various internet threats like malware, ransomware, adware, and phishing attacks. The cost of this service is around $35 per year. On the other hand, Asus provides a free subscription of Asus AiProtection powered by Trend Micro. AiProtection offers real-time network monitoring to detect malware, viruses, and other intrusions for all devices connected to your network.

Asus AiProtection provides a straightforward way to assess the network protection of the xt8 router against all possible internet threats. To initiate the process, navigate to the General menu > AiProtection and select the network protection tab. Click on the Scan button to generate a risk security assessment report from your router. The report will offer valuable insights into the level of protection provided by your router.

One critical area to pay attention to is the default user and router password. It is advisable to change these passwords when configuring the system for the first time. Additionally, the report will indicate the strength of your password and highlight any potential threats, such as phishing, brute force attacks, dictionary attacks, among others. Out of the two eero pro series, the legacy eero pro and eero 6 pro series, both use wifi backhaul link approach with both @2.4ghz and @5ghz radio bands dynamically. However, on pro 6e it is not specifically explained that wifi backhaul uses all three radio bands dynamically, however wifi backhaul link uses @6ghz radio bands shared with other connected existing 6e devices. Embedded Processor

What’s surprising about the latest release of the eero pro 6e is the setback of the processor embedded into this eero pro 6e machine board. Notice in the processor row on the table, the eero 6 pro uses a quad core processor, however it’s surprising that the latest pro 6e series that is expected to have the highest spec and features instead uses a dual core cpu.

Is the dual core processor on the eero pro 6e sufficient for tasks processing with three distinct radio bands compared to the three band eero 6 pro from two different radio bands? Or is this spec reduction to dual core meant to reduce production costs? I have no idea.

Bandwidth capacity

The total bandwidth difference between the two products is slightly different, asus provides a bandwidth allocation @6ghz that is twice as wide as the eero pro 6e, however the bandwidth allocation @5ghz is half the bandwidth of the eero. Does this matter? Of course there is a difference in mesh network performance when using wifi backhaul.

Backhaul

Eero pro 6e uses dedicated backhaul link 26ghz, however this band is also shared with all other compliant connected wifi 6e devices. Even if you don’t have any available wifi 6e connected devices, the system will run with great performance using 6ghz band backhaul and both 2.4ghz and 5ghz radio bands are used for all connected devices other than wifi 6e devices.

Compare with the backhaul link method on asus which selects the best available radio band automatically. It could be that when a lot of wifi 6e devices are connected, the system will choose @5ghz backhaul when there are not much clients in this band.

When you have more wifi 6e devices than wifi 5 ones, asus et8 would be the better solution. On the other hand when you have more wifi 5 devices than wifi 6e ones, eero pro 6e would be preference choice.

Besides wifi backhaul, both products provide option to use wired ethernet backhaul in addition of wifi backhaul. Even though you configure backhaul link to use wired ethernet backhaul, there is still portion of wifi backhaul reserved to enable later when the wired backhaul connection is disrupted. Eero only provides two Ethernet ports, so you can only use a daisy chain topology for backhaul links. To use the star backhaul topology, with eero it is necessary to add a separate unmanaged Ethernet switch and connect all the eero units to the switch.

Unlike the eero which only has two ethernet ports, the orbi rbk752 has more ethernet ports on the router unit, while the orbi satellite only has two ports as well. Orbi distinguish which one is to work as Orbi router and which ones are Orbi satellites; they cannot be exchanged like the eero router.

WAN port

Both of these products are equipped with one 1.0 Gbps wan port that allows you to subscribe to internet plan up to 1.0gbps. However, if multi-gig internet speed is required, the eero 6 pro cannot support more than 1gbps. In contrast to orbi which supports link aggregation for wan by combining wan port and one of the LAN port for multi-gig internet plan up to 2Gbps. Zigbee smart hub

TP-Link Deco X90

TP-link was successful with its deco x20 and deco x60 as its debut in mesh wifi 6 systems, the products that work at lower network segment. TPlink deco x90 ax6600 was showcased in its website for a while before finally released to the market.

The market had seen the emergence of several AX6000 mesh WiFi products that had become dominant. This includes Orbi RBK750, Velop MX5, and Asus ZenWiFi XT8. With X90 released, this product had the main competitors for asus xt8, orbi rbk750, and linksys velop mx5 series.

Deco x90 Design  

In contrast to the previous Deco X60 and X30 series, which had a cylindrical round body, the Deco X90 has a sleeker round cylindrical body with a layered enclosure that adds to its style. Despite its tower form factor, the Deco X90 remains compact with a small footprint. This design enables the antenna to be placed at a higher location, resulting in wider signal coverage and less interference with machine boards that are slightly further apart.

The newer model of this product was the deco x95 series with few features upgrades including wider aggregated bandwidth and more Ethernet ports. The body appearance is exactly the same as deco x90, except that it comes with more Ethernet port interfaces.

Dedicated backhaul

Out of all the Deco series that had been released before Deco x90, only this Deco X90 has been designed with a dedicated backhaul approach. Typically, tri-band mesh WiFi products utilize a dedicated backhaul on one of its two 5GHz radio bands. This is consistent with all the Orbi series, which have three radio bands and always use a dedicated backhaul at 5GHz. Although the previous Deco M9 series was also designed with a tri-band mesh, it used a dynamic backhaul approach instead of a dedicated one. It remains to be seen how the Asus XT8 uses its backhaul link approach.

Operation mode

If you currently have a wifi network from a wireless gateway (wireless router with built-in modem) such as Motorola MG8725 or perhaps Netgear CAX30 and Motorola MG8702, while you don’t want to buy a new modem, the deco x90 can be connected to the gateway by enabling this deco x90 product to work as a wireless AP instead of wireless router (the default setting).

However, there will be few features that cannot be enabled such as NAT, parental control, and QoS, it’s a shame if you force this device to work as an AP. If so, it’s a good idea to use a wireless AP device such as the Omada series.

AI technology is widely applied to various smart devices today, including security cameras that can recognize human faces and detect motion by humans and vehicles only. This enables cameras to ignore other motions of night animals such as ferrets or dogs, reducing false alerts.

While the Asus XT8 may not be equipped with this AI technology, it’s possible that they have implemented a complex routing technology for the best route to ensure optimal backhaul. This is one of the AI technology features.

AI-driven Antennas

The TP-Link Deco x90, and also the newer model Deco X95, come designed with the internal antennas with the taste of Artificial Intelligent (AI)-based Technology with its AI-driven Smart antennas.

The Deco X90 AX6600 is not vastly different from other AX6000 products like the Asus Zenwifi XT8 AX6600. There are only a few minor differences between the two, such as port interfaces and security protection. Let’s take a closer look at how these two products compare technically.

Deco x90 vs Asus xt8

Before the released of the Deco X90, the top-level mesh WiFi 6 product offered by TP-Link was the Deco X60, which competed with the Asus Zenwifi XT8 AX6600. However, they weren’t considered comparable, as the Deco X60 was in the AX3000 network segment. In contrast, the Asus Zenwifi XT8 offers greater flexibility as it allows you to select which of its two 5GHz radio bands is used as a dedicated backhaul. The XT8 also offers the option of wired Ethernet backhaul. When connecting multiple XT8 nodes, it’s recommended to select the 4,800Mbps @5GHz backhaul for larger bandwidth backhaul.

Wired Backhaul

Wired Ethernet backhaul is a concept common to both the Deco x90 and the Asus xt8 mesh wifi systems. To set up a wired backhaul between two Deco x90 units, you can use a Cat5e or Cat6 UTP cable with RJ45 connection at each end. One end of the cable should be connected to the Deco x90 that’s connected to your modem. And the other end to the Ethernet port of the other Deco. Make sure the cable length is no more than 300ft (100m). 100 m is the maximum length for UTP cable to operate without a signal booster. Once the cable connection is established, the wired backhaul will operate automatically and the wifi backhaul will be disconnected.

It’s worth noting that with the wired backhaul in operation, the wifi backhaul does not function as a connected device connection. Instead, it serves as a backup in case the wired backhaul is disrupted. When the wired backhaul is restored, the wifi backhaul will resume operation, effectively providing a failover system.

In contrast, Orbi offers an impressive multi-gig 10Gbps WAN port on its router node. This 10Gbps port is advantageous when the next generation of DOCSIS 4.0 cable technology arrives, which will support 10Gbps internet speeds.
